It’s as if the brain is programmed to send signals to the eyes to look, stare or drool over the beautiful ladies strutting around in their evening gowns and of course, the two-piece bikini. Beauty
Natural beauty, that is. Do your family members or friends always compliment on how good you look? It’s an added point if you’re from a mixed parentage. Look at Deborah Henry, who is of Indian and Irish mix. Or Lina Teoh of Malaysian-Dutch parentage. Both of them made Malaysia proud in Miss World where the latter crowned second runner-up. Also, the recently crowned Miss Universe Malaysia, Kimberly Leggett is of Malaysian-British parentage. Of course, we have our very own Datuk Michelle Yeoh and Wincci Soo, who are of pure Chinese.

Besides the pretty face, you need to have a fit body. It’s kind of stereotyping other girls with beautiful curves, but, this is how the game is played. Busty, slim waist and thighs with long smooth legs are what viewers would like to see.

Brain
Beauty pageant nowadays does not solely rely on beauty. It’s important for the contestant to be smart, at least in the question and answer category, where the judges will decide who gets the coveted title. This segment will determine whether if you’re capable to represent the country or title for bigger cause internationally. It’s interesting to watch beautiful ladies waiting anxiously in line before being asked difficult and interesting questions. What and how you answer in the pageant will determine whether your response will be listed under the ‘Best Answers’ or ‘Worst Answers’ online years after your participation.

Personality
Besides beauty and brain, a contestant needs to show good personality. It includes good self-discipline where you’re punctual at every event/activity and does not act like a diva. Also, be nice to everyone. Greet them. Take the initiative to talk to them. All these little things show how you carry yourself and the judges might take notice and give you added points.

Style & Poise
During catwalk for the swimsuit and evening gown segments, the girls will be judged by their style and poise. Contestants need to know how to carry themselves confidently and strike that winning pose. Find your most natural pose, without looking stiff. Look at videos of former contestants and ask your family or friends to pinpoint your best pose and walks. While doing all these, remember to put on a smile. Practise in front of a mirror to make sure you walk, pose and smile naturally.
